ABOUT

Thank you for visiting the on-line home of John Sorensen. I have roughly 150,000 images on file, all taken in the lower 48 states and East Africa.

I spent the first 30 years of my life on Long Island, New York, but my passion for nature photography grew from my deep interset in bird watching which began at age 22 during an overland trip to California with my uncle Bob Tintle. During a two week period, Bob gave me a crash course in everything you need to know to start birding, a great introduction for a beginner. When I returned to New York, I immediately purchased binoculars and a spotting scope along with a Peterson Field Guide. I spent the next 8 years birding the East Coast when not working with my landscape construction business on the North Fork of Long Island.

Eight years after my initial visit to California, I decided to move there settling in the Monterey Peninsula area. After spending several years with some of the Central Coast's best birders and photographers on land and at sea, I wanted to capture images of birds and their behaviors at a closer range on film. Subsequently, I purchased John Shaw's book The Nature Photographer's Complete Guide to Professioal Field Techniques, a Canon T-90 camera, a 500mm 4.5 Canon L series lens, and a Gitzo Studex tripod and soon my passion for nature photography blossomed. Since that time, and a lot of camera gear later, I spend my days, weekends, and vacations in the field doing what I love most-recording images of nature.
